The National War Memorial stands next to India Gate in New Delhi, along the Central Vista, and honours Indian soldiers killed in the country's wars, including those fought since independence. Its low, landscaped design is meant for quiet reflection rather than display.
The memorial is laid out in four concentric rings. At the centre, the circle of immortality carries an eternal flame on an obelisk; the Amar Jawan Jyoti, first lit under India Gate in 1972 after the 1971 India-Pakistan War, was moved here in January 2022 and is marked by an inverted bayonet and a helmet. The circle of bravery has six bronze murals of armed forces actions, the circle of sacrifice lists the names of the dead in gold on granite, and the outer circle of protection is a ring of trees.
