The story

The National Police Memorial stands at the top of Shantipath in Chanakyapuri and honours members of India's police forces who have died on duty since Independence. Its Wall of Valour, laid out among flowerbeds, carries the names of 35,134 officers. The site is arranged in tiers that look over a ceremonial parade ground below.

At its centre, beside a granite Wreath Podium, rises a 30-foot sculpture cut from a single block of black granite. The National Gallery of Modern Art conceived the design, drawing on ancient cenotaphs, and combined polished and unpolished faces on the stone to suggest the different sides of police work.
