01 — The story

The story

Talkatora Garden takes its name from two Hindi words, tal for tank and katora for bowl, because the site began as a Mughal-era water tank that also served as a swimming pool. The gardens were terraced into the gentle slopes of the Delhi Ridge and are entered through three large gateways, with fountains, water channels, lawns and flowerbeds inside. An indoor stadium stands at the centre of the grounds.

The area also has a place in military history. On 28 March 1737, a Maratha army led by Bajirao fought the Mughals near Talkatora, one of the clashes between the two powers in that period.
