The story

The National Rail Museum opened in 1977 on 11 acres in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, and traces the history of Indian railways through locomotives, coaches and saloons. Highlights include the Fairy Queen, the oldest working steam locomotive in the world, and the Patiala State Monorail of 1907. Royal saloons that belonged to the Maharajas of Indore and Mysore are finished in teak, gold and ivory.

A mini-train carries visitors around the yard, and coach simulators show modern rail technology. The museum restaurant, The Rails, is built as a copy of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus dome, and food reaches the tables on a model train.
