The story

The National Gallery of Modern Art opened in 1954 in Jaipur House, close to India Gate, and charts Indian art from the middle of the 18th century to the present. Its holdings run to more than 17,000 works by over 2,000 artists, among them Thomas Daniell, Raja Ravi Varma, Abanindranath and Rabindranath Tagore, and Amrita Sher-Gil, across painting, sculpture, graphics, photography and installation.

The original building is shaped like a butterfly and has a central dome by Sir Arthur Blomfield. A new wing added in 2009 brought the display area to 12,000 square metres. The gallery also has an art reference library, a documentation centre, a conservation lab, an auditorium, a preview theatre, a shop and a cafeteria.
