01 — The story

The story

Nagardhan Fort stands in Nagpur district and is credited to Bakht Buland Shah, the ruler of Deogarh who founded Nagpur. Raghuji Bhonsle enlarged it in 1740, and later rulers altered it further. The place itself is far older: it is linked with the Vakataka dynasty, and a copper-plate grant of the Vakataka king Pravarasena II connected with the site shows it was settled long before the medieval walls went up.

An outer rampart with bastions surrounds an inner wall enclosing a group of buildings. The walls carry a distinctive red coating, and the main door is studded with nails meant to stop charging horses and elephants. Below ground is a small temple where an image of Durga sits on the ledge of a well. A museum inside the fort traces its growth through old artefacts and displays, and the ramparts look out over farmland and low hills.
