Ambazari Lake lies on the south-western edge of Nagpur and is the oldest and largest of the city's eleven lakes. It was made in 1870 to supply water to Nagpur, carried through clay pipes to officials and prominent residents, and for more than three decades it was one of the city's chief water sources. The Nag River rises here. Mango trees once ringed the water, which gave the lake its name, from amba, the Marathi word for mango.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation now runs the lake as a place for recreation. Beside it, Ambazari Garden was laid out in 1958 over 18 acres. Its musical fountain and electric rides have closed, but the garden stays busy with morning walkers and afternoon visitors, music plays from speakers along the paths, and an open-air green gym serves people who come to exercise.
