01 — The story

The story

Mahavir Mandir in Patna is dedicated to Hanuman and is among the most venerated Hanuman temples in north India, with worshippers arriving every day. Swami Balanand of the Ramanandi sect founded it in 1730 AD, and the Patna High Court acknowledged its historic standing in 1948.

The temple grew in importance after Partition in 1947, when it sheltered and comforted thousands of refugees arriving in Bihar. As the number of devotees rose, the old shrine was rebuilt in concrete, and in 1987 a plan was announced to pull it down and replace it with the present marble temple.
