01 — The story

The story

Mahatma Gandhi Setu is a road bridge about 5.5 km long that spans the Ganga at Patna, with tall pylons and arched sections along its length. Building it took more than ten years of planning and work, and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi opened it in 1982.

Years of heavy traffic and congestion wore down the deck, and in 2017 Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered a restoration of the structure, with work carried on since then. Crossings at sunrise and sunset give wide views over the river and the changing light on the water.
