The story

Madikeri Fort, also called Mercara Fort, stands in Madikeri, Kodagu district, Karnataka. It was first built in the later 1600s by Mudduraja, who also raised the palace inside. Tipu Sultan later rebuilt it in granite and renamed the site Jaffarabad. Dodda Vira Rajendra took the fort in 1790, Linga Rajendra II renovated the palace in 1812–14, and the British added to the fort in 1834.

Two stone elephants stand at the north-east entrance. The palace now houses the Deputy Commissioner's office, while St Mark's Church in the south-east corner, built in 1859 by East India Company soldiers and taken over by the state government in 1971, is home to the Madikeri Fort Museum, run by the Karnataka State Archaeological Department. Its exhibits cover arms and artefacts from the fort's founding to British rule, and a big portrait of Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa hangs there.
