The story

Nalknad Palace, called Naalnaad Aramane in Kodava, stands near the village of Yavakapadi in Kodagu district, Karnataka. Prince Dodda Vira Rajendra, who escaped from Tipu Sultan's custody in 1786 and fought to win back his kingdom, could not retake the capital Mercara, so he based himself in the thick forest of Nalknad and built this two-storey palace in the regional style between 1792 and 1794. His second marriage, to Mahadevammaji, was celebrated here in 1796.

The palace later became the last refuge of Chikka Veerarajendra, the last Haleri king of Kodagu, before the British deposed him. Its surroundings served as the location for Shanti, a Kannada film with just one actor.
