The story

Pazhassi Dam, also called the Kuyilur Barrage, is a stone masonry diversion dam across the west-flowing Bavali river at Kuyiloor, near Veliyambra in Kannur district; the nearest towns are Mattanur and Iritty. It is named after Pazhassi Raja, a patriot king remembered for dying a hero's death in war, and was opened by Prime Minister Morarji Desai in 1979. The river rises in Coorg, in Karnataka.

The barrage is about 19 m high and 245 m long, with 16 radial gates, and its reservoir spreads over 650 hectares. A 46 km canal carries water to paddy fields in Iritty and Taliparamba taluks, and the dam also supplies drinking water to Kannur district. The dam site and its reservoir are noted for their scenery, and there are gardens at the dam.
