The story

The Harangi Dam is a masonry dam near Hudgur village, about 9 km from Kushalnagar in Kodagu district, built across the Harangi, which is the earliest large tributary to join the Kaveri. The river starts in the Western Ghats, in Kodagu's Pushpagiri Hills, and meets the Kaveri near Kudige. Its reservoir covers about 20 square kilometres, with marshy ground between open water and dry land, and a small hydroelectric plant on the left bank has run since 1999.

Scrub, deciduous, semi-evergreen and evergreen forest surround the reservoir, home to deer and monkeys, and a 2016–17 study recorded 44 bird species nearby, most of them in the months after the monsoon. On the right bank, the Harangi Tree Park and Elephant Camp opened on 10 October 2022 across 40 acres, and the state is working with tourism agencies to bring water sports to the reservoir.
