The story

Honnamana Kere is a lake and holy site at Doddamalthe, near Sulimalthe village, about 6 kilometres from Somwarpet in Kodagu. It is the largest lake in the district, set among hills, cliffs and coffee plantations, and temperatures here stay between about 16 and 27 degrees through the year.

The lake is tied to the goddess Honnamma, who according to legend gave up her life for the good of the people; the folk tale Kerege Hara grew out of the story of the lake's making. A temple to her stands beside the water and has recently been improved. Every year at the Gowri festival a special puja is held and a bagina, a set of the goddess's belongings, is offered to the lake. A few homestays operate nearby.
