The story

Irupu Falls, also called Lakshmana Tirtha Falls, is a freshwater cascade in the Brahmagiri range of Kodagu district, on the border with Kerala's Wayanad. It lies about 48 kilometres from Virajpet off the road from Gonikoppal to Nagarhole, and gives rise to the Lakshmana Tirtha, a tributary of the Kaveri.

The falls are both a tourist sight and a place of pilgrimage. Legend says that when Rama and Lakshmana crossed these hills in search of Sita, Lakshmana shot an arrow into the slope to bring forth water for his brother, creating the river. The water is believed to wash away sins, and thousands come to bathe on Shivaratri, when the Rameshwara temple on the riverbank along the approach also fills with pilgrims. A forest trail continues from the falls up to Brahmagiri peak.
