01 — The story

The story

Nagarhole National Park straddles Mysuru and Kodagu districts and covers about 848 sq km. Once named Rajiv Gandhi National Park, it is one of Karnataka's main tiger reserves and an important area under both Project Tiger and Project Elephant.

Its forests and rivers support a large population of predators and grazers. Besides tigers there are leopards, dholes (Asiatic wild dogs) and sloth bears, while Asian elephants, gaur, sambar, chital, barking deer, four-horned antelope, wild boar, mouse deer and the south-western langur are among the plant-eaters. Birdlife is varied too. Visitors explore on safaris and guided walks, and watering holes are a common place to see elephant herds.
