The Southern Regional Centre of the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS), the national museum of humankind, occupies Wellington House, a heritage building in central Mysuru. Its exhibitions, grouped into three categories, look at the customs and heritage of India's many communities and at the diversity and shared bonds of the country.
Much of the display deals with how indigenous peoples have long lived in balance with nature, drawing out links between culture, tradition and environment. The centre also runs participatory programmes: Do and Learn, in which artisans demonstrate their crafts, and Operation Salvage, which works with local communities to preserve cultural heritage, along with field workshops and special projects.
