01 — The story

The story

Madangad, or Madan, is a fort in the Kalsubai range of the Nashik region, standing in a row with Alang and Kulang. Its summit is a fairly small, tilted plateau with no buildings or ruins, only a cave that can shelter about 30 people and two small water cisterns.

The usual approach is from Ambevadi or Samrad, reached via Kasara or Igatpuri and Ghoti, with up to three hours' walk to the col between Alang and Madan. From there the route follows narrow steps with the valley open on one side, then a rock face of about 40 ft that needs ropes and harnesses, and finally a run of small, uneven steps cut into the summit rock. The same way serves for the descent. The trek is not for beginners or anyone uneasy with heights, food must be carried up, and bee attacks have been reported on the traverse.
