Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra, rising to 1,646 metres in Akole taluka of Ahilyanagar district, and is often called the Everest of Maharashtra. It lies in the Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary, and its ridge forms the boundary between Igatpuri taluka of Nashik and Akole. Like the rest of the Western Ghats, it is built of Deccan flood basalt.
The peak is named after Kalsubai, one of three tribal sisters; nearby Ratangad takes its name from another, Ratnabai. Trekkers, wildlife watchers and devotees of the Kalsubai temple come through the year. The usual route starts at Bari and is a round trip of about 13 kilometres with some 820 metres of climbing, a moderately hard one-day walk through green slopes and past waterfalls. The hills drain into Arthur Lake, impounded by Bhandardara Dam about 6 kilometres away.
