01 — The story

The story

Kulang Fort rises on the western side of the Kalsubai range in the Igatpuri area of Nashik district, next to Madangad and Alang; the three were built to protect the old trade road between Nashik and Kalyan. It probably passed from the Mughals to the Peshwa in 1760 along with other Nashik forts, and in 1818 the British captured it, though they left its steps intact.

From the base village of Ambevadi or Kurangwadi the climb takes two to three hours up rock-cut steps through dense forest in the Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary, with drinking water on the way and plenty on top. The summit has little building beyond a stone wada and the ruined main gate, but there are rock-cut cisterns and roomy caves that can shelter up to 100 people. There is no firewood on the fort, so trekkers carry their own or a stove. Kalsubai, Patta, Aundha, Madangad, Alang and Ratangad can all be seen from the top.
