01 — The story

The story

Kavnai Fort sits on a hillock north of Kavnai village in Igatpuri taluka, Nashik district, 18 kilometres by road from Igatpuri; Kapilatirth lies close to the village. The fort was built by the Mughals and passed to the Peshwas from the Nizam under the treaty that followed the Battle of Udgir in 1760. Later a British force under Colonel Briggs took it, along with Tringalwadi and fifteen other forts.

The ascent follows a ridge that starts in Kavnai village. The final pitch is sheer, with rough steps cut in the rock and a ladder across them. Little is left at the top: only the main gate and a small pond remain.
