01 — The story

The story

Khukhragarh, in the Bero block of Ranchi district in Jharkhand, was once a capital of the Nagvanshi dynasty, rulers of parts of the state. Bhim Karn moved his seat here in the 12th century, having beaten Raksel of Surguja. A Mughal invasion followed in 1585, while Madhu Singh was king, led by Akbar's general Shahbaz Khan Kamboh. King Durjan Shah is said to have later shifted the capital to Navratangarh.

The site's remains came to light when the archaeological department excavated it in 2009. Work uncovered the Nagvanshi fort, dated to the 12th century, along with an ancient temple complex, coins and pottery.
