Khandoli Dam lies around 10 km north-east of Giridih towards Bengabad, beneath Khandoli hill, and its lake supplies water to more than a lakh people in Giridih. The district tourism department has developed it for visitors. From the second week of November to about March, migrant birds arrive from northern Asia, the Himalayan belt and further afield; species include great cormorant, ruddy shelduck, bar-headed goose and mallard, though numbers have fallen through pollution and poaching. Winter brings the most visitors.
A 6-acre amusement park beside the lake has a toy train, swings, elephant and camel rides and a canteen, and a watchtower and a 600-foot hillock look over the area. The granite rocks of Khandoli hill are used for rock climbing, rappelling, zip-lining and trekking, while the lake offers pedal boats, speed boats, kayaking, canoeing, sailing and other water sports, with national-level training held here. Paragliding, parasailing and hot-air ballooning also take place.
