The story

Naulakha Mandir is a Hindu temple in Deoghar, commissioned by Rani Charushila of the Pathuria Ghat royal family. Its name means "nine lakh", after the sum of nine lakh rupees the building is said to have cost, and it is one of the best-known landmarks of the town after the Baidyanath temple.

The temple rises over a large courtyard ringed by colonnades and pavilions, and its tall central dome dominates the skyline. The walls and interior are covered in carved motifs and figures from Hindu mythology, and the main sanctum holds a black stone image. The temple remains in active worship and is a gathering place at festival times. Basukinath, another major Shiva temple of the region, lies about 43 km away.
