01 — The story

The story

Trikut Pahar, or Trikut Hill, rises about 15 km from Deoghar and is both a pilgrimage site and a popular outing from the temple town. Its name refers to its three main peaks, which are linked with Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. The highest point is about 2,470 ft, standing some 1,500 ft above the plain; two of the peaks can be climbed, while the third is too steep to be safe.

The Trikutachal Mahadev temple sits in the forest on the slopes, and the hermitage of Sage Dayananda is also on the hill. A stepped path and trekking routes take about two hours to the top, passing spots such as Sita Dweep, Narayan Shila, Ravan Gupha, Ganesh Parvat and Belpatra Bagan. One peak is known as Ravana's Helipad, from the legend that Ravana came this way carrying a Shivalinga from Kailash. In the monsoon, from July to September, streams and small falls run down the hill, and the Mayurakshi River flows past its foot.
