The story

Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. Around the main temple stand 21 other shrines, among them Kali, Gayatri and Kaal Bhairav. The Parvati shrine, a Shaktipeeth where Sati's heart is said to have fallen, is tied to the main temple with long red threads, marking the union of Shiva and Shakti.

In legend, Ravana was taking a Jyotirlinga to Lanka on condition it never touch the ground; Vishnu, disguised as a shepherd boy, set it down here, and Ravana left a thumb dent in it. The east-facing, lotus-shaped temple is about 72 ft high and is crowned by three gold vessels from the Maharaja of Gidhaur and a Panchshul trident.

During Shravan (July–August) the Shrawani Mela draws millions of kanwariyas, who walk about 108 km from Sultanganj carrying Ganga water to pour on the linga, chanting "Bol Bam".
