Usri Falls lies about 13 km east of Giridih on the road to Tundi and is a popular place for picnics. The name is explained as a beautiful source. Here the Usri, which feeds the Barakar, pours down a steep gorge, dropping about 12 metres in three separate streams, with dense forest all around.
The falls also expose the ancient gneiss of the region well. Some rocks have split into huge blocks whose smooth, polished faces are criss-crossed with veins of different colours. Below the falls the riverbed first runs flat and gently uneven before narrowing again into a gorge. Taxis, tongas and auto-rickshaws run out from Giridih, and the government is developing the area for visitors together with Khandoli Dam and Parasnath.
