01 — The story

The story

Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary, formerly known as Hazaribagh National Park, protects about 184 sq km of hilly country in Hazaribagh district and ranks among the older wildlife reserves in India. The terrain mixes low rolling hills, steep cliffs, deep valleys, streams and open grassland, and the tropical forest cover is made up largely of sal.

Leopards, sloth bears and several kinds of deer live here, together with a wide variety of birds. Watchtowers set up beside water holes give visitors a chance to see animals coming in to drink. Tribal communities still live within the sanctuary's limits and carry on their traditional ways alongside the wildlife, which adds a human dimension to a visit.
