01 — The story

The story

Betla National Park covers around 232 sq km of forest country in Latehar district, Jharkhand. The area was first protected as the Palamau Wildlife Sanctuary and was raised to national park status in 1989 in recognition of its ecological value. Tribal peoples such as the Oraon and Munda have lived in the region for centuries, and their villages still lie around the park.

Its habitats range from tropical forest to open grassland and wetland. Elephants, tigers and sloth bears are the best-known mammals, and more than 200 bird species have been recorded, among them the Malabar pied hornbill and the Indian pitta, which makes the park a rewarding stop for birdwatchers as well as those hoping to see large animals.
