Netarhat Dam holds back the Auranga River in the hill country of Latehar district, creating a reservoir set among forested slopes. Built of masonry and steel, with spillways and channels to manage the flow, the structure blends into the surrounding hills, and a walkway along its crest gives views over the still water.
The forests around the reservoir support a variety of birds and plants, which brings in nature lovers and photographers. Kayaking and canoeing are possible on the calm water, and the nearby hills offer treks and some rock climbing, with views of the dam and valley widening as the trails climb. It is a quiet place away from towns, suited to an unhurried half day.
