01 — The story

The story

Farrukh Nagar Fort, in Gurugram district, was raised in the 18th century under the Mughals. It was ordered by Faujdar Khan, a general trusted by Emperor Farrukhsiyar, and served as a military base that guarded trade routes and held Mughal control over the area, while also acting as a seat of local administration.

Thick walls and bastions built to house soldiers surround a large enclosure, entered through gates carved with intricate patterns. Inside stand a palace with decorated rooms and open courtyards, a mosque with domes and carvings, and a stepwell. The fort shows Mughal, Persian and Indian influences, and conservation work has been undertaken to protect it.
