The story

Baoli Ghaus Ali Shah, also called Ghaus Khan ki Baoli, is a stepwell at Farrukhnagar in Gurugram district. Built from stone, bricks and lime plaster, it looks modest from outside, but the interior is large enough to have held hundreds of soldiers, and going down into it has been likened to entering a Turkish hammam or a Roman amphitheatre. Its shaft reaches more than a hundred feet into the sandy soil.

The structure served both as a lookout over the surrounding land and as a year-round supply of fresh water, and nearby residents drew water from it until the municipality brought in taps. A local road now cuts through the middle of the baoli, one of its original underground passages lies beneath that road, and its terrace forms a low bridge above it. Shaded alcoves and arched pavilions surround the main well.
