01 — The story

The story

The Dogra Art Museum, once called the Dogra Art Gallery, occupies the Pink Hall within Jammu's Mubarak Mandi complex. The hall was put up to mark Edward VII's visit to Jammu in 1875 and originally housed both the public library and the museum. The collection has since grown to 7,216 objects.

Highlights include the Rasmanjari series of Basohli miniature paintings and illustrated Persian manuscripts of the Shahnama and Sikandernama. Terracotta heads excavated at Akhnoor sit alongside coins from the Kushan, Mughal, Sikh and Dogra periods. The galleries also display sculpture, textiles, inscribed stone slabs, arms and armour, fossils, jewellery, metalware, musical instruments and modern art.
