01 — The story

The story

Dermal Fort stands on the Galna hill range in Satana taluka of Nashik district, one of four forts strung along the ridge with Pisola, Kankrala and Galna. Although counted among the district's important forts, it sees few trekkers, and little of its old buildings remains.

The base village is Tinghari, 12 km from the town of Nampur, with a second route from Bilpuri. From the east of Tinghari a safe path crosses open plateau, but there is no marked trail, so a local guide is advisable; the scarp is about ninety minutes away and the full ascent around two hours, though the climb itself is easy. On top are a small gate, a few cisterns with plenty of water, rock carvings of Ganesh and Maruti, and a cave where seven or eight trekkers can spend the night. About an hour is enough to see it all.
