The story

Kankrala is an old hill fort spread across two hills in Malegaon taluka, Nashik district, south of Galna fort. Little of its history is known except that British troops led by Colonel Wallace took it in 1818.

The fort is reached from Kankrala village, about 5 km from Karanjgavhan, which lies 11 km from Malegaon via Vadgaon and Lendhane or about 15 km from Zodage on National Highway 3. A cart road leads to a temple below the fort, from which it is about an hour's climb with no proper steps or path. Near the dilapidated gate are a few caves and rock-cut cisterns with drinkable water, and there are more cisterns on top, but beyond some ruins no buildings survive.
