Galna Fort stands on hills between Malegaon and Dhule in Malegaon taluka of Nashik district, guarding the old trade route from Burhanpur to Surat. It is among the forts of Maharashtra whose bastions and entrance remain in good condition. Buses run from Malegaon to Dongarale village, 4 km from Galna.
The fort lay on the edge of the Deccan and was important by the late 15th century. Around 1487 the brothers Malik Wuji and Malik Ashraf, governors of Daulatabad, took it from the Marathas, and it later passed to the Nizam Shahis of Ahmadnagar. Its commandant paid tribute to the Mughals in 1634, Aurangzeb attacked it in 1704 and took it in 1705, and in 1804 a force under Colonel Wallace captured it from the Holkars. After 1818 a mamlatdar briefly had his office here.
