The story

Nhavigad, also called Nhavagad or Ratangad, is a small but hard-to-climb fort in the Selbari range of the Baglan area in Nashik district. The Selbari and Dholbari ranges run side by side from east to west, and the old Burhanpur–Surat trade road passed between them; forts like this one were kept to watch it. Records tell of a fierce battle in 1439 at the foot of Nhavigad and neighbouring Tambolya hill between the rulers of the Bahmani kingdom and Gujarat, after which both armies, badly mauled, withdrew at night.

The base village, Patalwadi, is about an hour from Taharabad, and taking a local escort from the village is strongly advised. The steady climb takes about an hour up a bare, risky slope that turns slippery in the monsoon, with rock-cut steps at the end. A small Saptashringi Devi temple stands halfway. The top has no walls, only a few rock-cut cisterns and caves, and no good water, but it looks out to Mangi-Tungi, Salher, Salota, Hargad, Mulher and Mora.
