The story

Purna Wildlife Sanctuary covers 160.84 sq km of the Dang district, where hills, plateaus and small valleys mark the northern and western fringe of the Western Ghats. Declared a sanctuary in July 1990, it holds the densest forest cover in Gujarat and takes its name from the Purna River, one of many streams crossing it. Heavier rain than most of the state receives supports tropical moist deciduous forest dominated by tall teak and thick stands of bamboo.

Around 700 plant species have been recorded, among them khair, haldu, sisham, salai and timru. Leopards are the chief predator and their numbers are rising; rhesus and bonnet macaques, Indian civets, porcupines, four-horned antelope and sloth bears also live here. Birdlife includes the common grey hornbill, grey junglefowl, barbets, woodpeckers, bee-eaters, flycatchers and several raptors.
