01 — The story

The story

Billo Ki Powri is a flight of steps hewn into a granite face near Patnitop. It once had more than 400 steps, but years of heavy use have worn away the lower section, and about 270 can still be clearly made out. The steps rise so sharply that the climb feels closer to going up a ladder, and the town of Kud comes into view as the path gains height.

The work is credited to a former ruler of Chenani and was done without machinery. The stairway ends at a spot called Dawariyai, which paragliders use as a take-off point. Local folklore connects the name with a woman called Billo.
