01 — The story

The story

This museum sits beside the excavation site at Ropar (Rupnagar), which was the first Harappan settlement to be excavated after Indian independence. It displays what was dug up there and traces the story of the area from the Harappan period through to medieval times.

The finds include Harappan objects, Painted Grey Ware pottery, steatite seals, copper and bronze tools, and material from the Saka, Kushana and Gupta periods, among them gold coins of Chandragupta. A highlight is the Vina Vadini, a figure of a woman playing the vina. The museum also presents protected monuments of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh as well as World Heritage sites.
