01 — The story

The story

Amrit Udyan, formerly called the Mughal Gardens, spreads over 15 acres inside the grounds of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President's residence. It was laid out in the 1920s and 1930s, after the British moved their capital from Calcutta to Delhi in 1911 and built the Viceroy's House on Raisina Hill. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed it together with William R. Mustoe, the city's horticulture superintendent, mixing Indian and British ideas with a debt to Persian gardens.

The plan follows the Char Bagh pattern, with straight water channels, symmetrical lawns and fountains. It is made up of a Rectangular Garden around a central fountain, a narrow Long Garden with a channel down its middle, a Circular Garden built around another fountain, and a Sunken Garden set below the rest, all planted with flowerbeds.
