The story

Amargarh Fort stands in Amargarh village near Jahazpur in Bhilwara district, Rajasthan. It was probably built around 1745 by Raja Amar Mal, a leading figure of the Jadon Rajputs, a Chandravanshi clan that traces its descent from Krishna. Raised as a thikana, or feudal estate, for the Jadons, who held high posts at the Karauli court, it was laid out as a place of rest in natural surroundings, in keeping with Rajput taste. Its origins are disputed, though: the Meena community holds that a Meena chief of the Nadla gotra raised it before Rajput rule, and for centuries Meenas have worshipped Amba Mata, Bhairu ji and Shiva's family inside.

The fort sits on a hill amid paddy fields, forest and mountains, and is probably smaller than great forts such as Amber or Mehrangarh. Its architecture is not well recorded. Thakur Sahib Ashok Singh later turned it into a heritage hotel, keeping its Rajput architecture and character.
