01 — The story

The story

Bundi Palace, also called Garh Palace, is one of the largest royal residences in India and dominates the old town of Bundi. Rather than one building it is a group of smaller palaces. Work began in the 17th century under Rao Raja Ratan Singh Hada, and later rulers kept adding to it for some 300 years.

The complex combines Rajput features such as jharokha balconies and carved pillars, many with elephant brackets, with Mughal-style courtyards, gardens, water features and floral and geometric decoration. Its walls carry well-known Bundi frescoes. Rudyard Kipling, who is thought to have written part of Kim in Bundi, described the palace as looking like the work of goblins rather than men.
