Raniji ki Baori, the queen's stepwell, is in the centre of Bundi. It was finished in 1699 for Rani Nathavati Solanki, junior wife of Bundi's Rao Raja Anirudh Singh, who picked its carvings, and it once supplied water to the people of the town.
The well goes down about 46 metres in several storeys, each with its own place of worship, showing that it was also a social space. The narrow entrance has four pillars and stone elephants at the corners, and a tall arched gateway leads to the flights of steps. Ogee-bracketed arches and finely carved pillars line the way to the water.
