01 — The story

The story

This cenotaph, or chhatri, in Bundi was put up in 1683 by Rao Raja Anirudh Singh in memory of his foster brother, Deva (Dewa Gujar). It stands on a raised platform and takes its name from the 84 pillars that hold up its domed roof.

The pillars and ceiling are carved in Rajput style, and a Shivling sits under the canopy, giving the memorial a religious role as well. Bundi itself was the capital of the Hada kingdom of Hadoti, founded when Rao Deva took the area from the local Meenas.
