The story

Amar Mahal is a red sandstone palace on the bank of the Tawi in Jammu, built in the 1890s in the manner of a French chateau. It was the last official home of the Dogra royal family and now serves as a museum.

The best-known exhibit is a 120 kg golden throne with gold lions at its corners. Galleries hold Pahari miniatures, among them a rare set of 47 paintings telling the story of Nala and Damayanti, as well as modern works by M.F. Husain and G.R. Santosh. Royal portraits line the Durbar Hall, and the private rooms of Maharani Tara Devi survive with her silver bedspread and Victorian bathroom. A library of about 25,000 rare books covers subjects from philosophy to fiction.
