Aksa Beach lies in Aksa village, Malad, close to Marve Beach in Mumbai, and is a popular weekend spot with private cottages and hotels, some rented to visitors. It is counted among the cleanest beaches in the city. The East Indian, Pathare and Koli communities are the original people of the area. One end of the beach is closed by the INS Hamla naval base, the other by a small beach known as Dana Paani.
The sea here is hazardous. Strong currents, shifting sands, quicksand and two tidal streams meeting over a rocky shore make swimming unsafe, and warning signs and lifeguards are in place. Even so, Aksa has one of the highest drowning counts of any Mumbai beach, with most accidents in the crowded pre-monsoon holiday season. Around 15,000 people visit at weekends. Conditions worsen further in the monsoon.
