Wagheshwari Temple, counted among the well-known temples of Mumbai, stands in Goregaon East, close to Gokuldham Colony, and is dedicated to the goddess Bhagwati, worshipped here as Wagheshwari Mata, who is understood either as Parvati in her form as Durga or as Saraswati in her form as Vagdevi.
Large sculpted elephants decorate the temple entrance. A notable custom here is the sindoor ceremony, in which married women mark one another's foreheads with red powder. Because sindoor is a sacred sign of marriage for Hindu women, the ritual carries real weight for those who take part.
