The story

Velladainatha Swami Temple is a Hindu temple in the village of Thirukkarukavur in Mayiladuthurai district. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, the Shiva shrines praised in the Tevaram hymns, in this case by Tirugnanasambandar and Sundarar.

The presiding deity is Somaskanda and the goddess is Kaviaganni, and there are shrines to Ganesha, Durga, and Murugan with Valli and Deivayanai. Tradition holds that this is where the saint Sundarar was cleansed of the sin of killing Jains who had lost a debate with him. The water of the tank before the temple is believed to turn white on the new moon day of the Tamil month of Thai (January–February).
