The story

Azhagiyasingar Temple is a Vishnu temple in the village of Thiruvali in Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu. Vishnu is worshipped here as Alagiyasingar, a form of Narasimha, with Lakshmi as Purnavalli. Kulasekara Alvar and Thirumangai Alvar sang of it, and because their verses refer to both this temple and the one at Thirunagari, the two are counted together as a single Divya Desam. The name is traced to the embrace, or aalinganam, Narasimha gave Lakshmi when she sat on his lap to calm his anger after he killed Hiranyakasipu.

The temple is small, about half an acre within granite walls, and is thought to date from the Cholas with later Vijayanagara and Thanjavur Nayak work. Its seated granite image shows Lakshmi on the right side of Narasimha's lap, where most temples place her on the left. A shrine to Thirumangai Alvar stands outside the walls, opposite the Garuda Mandapam. The Alvar's festival in the month of Thai is the main event of the year.
